Corvallis Police, bomb squad respond to hand grenade

10:30 a.m.: Corvallis police and the Oregon State Police bomb squad last night responded to a report that a hand grenade had been left outside an apartment on 4th Street in Corvallis.

Police later arrested Stephen Surdyka, 54, for disorderly conduct in connection with the incident.

Police closed part of the 300 block of southwest fourth until the bomb squad concluded that the device did not contain explosives.

"He left it on the porch with a bunch of his stuff and someone saw it," said CPD Captain Don Hendrickson. "You've got to assume it was a live grenade until you find out otherwise."

Surdyka said he purchased the grenade earlier in the day for $5. Surdyka also said he did not believe the hand grenade was in working condition.
