Raiders lock up playoff berth

Baseball

Senior Josh Liebeskind poked a bases-loaded hit into left field in the bottom of the seventh on Tuesday to lift Crescent Valley past Lebanon 7-6 into the state baseball playoffs with the Mid-Willamette Conference victory.

Crescent Valley (15-9, 12-7) clinched no worse than fourth-place in the Mid-Willamette Conference with the victory. The Raiders could move up as high as second, depending on how other series in the MWC play out this week.

“We’re obviously satisfied with making it,” CV coach Dave Mintken said.

Scott Stone (1-0) threw one inning of relief, shutting the Warriors down, to earn the victory.

“Scott hasn’t pitched much for us lately, with our starters getting shutouts, but he came in and shut them down in the seventh,” Mintken said. “They couldn’t do anything against him in the seventh and he gave us a chance to get the seventh going.”

The Raiders opened the seventh with back-to-back singles by Thomas McCarthy and Jake Likewise before Kiel Larkin bunted both runners over.

The Warriors intentially walked Van Fudge, who had tripled earlier in the game, to load the bases and set up the double play.

Liebeskind then followed with his game-winning single.

CV plays at Lebanon today and will host the Warriors on Friday.
