Crescent Valley boys, girls get past Corvallis

By Raju Woodward
Gazette-Times Reporter

In both teams’ final tuneup before districts, the Crescent Valley High boys and girls track and field teams swept Corvallis on Wednesday at CV.

The girls won 91.5-63.5, while the boys were even more dominant, scoring 100 points to CHS’s 45.

Leading the way for the Raiders boys was junior Hunter Park, who ran in four events. He took first in the 100- and 200-meter races and was anchor on the Raiders’ winning 400 and 1,600 relay teams.

Park wasn’t challenged as much as he would’ve liked. Nevertheless, he was happy to win the 100 because he normally doesn’t run the event. There was also the simple matter of finishing ahead of the Spartans.

“Well, they’re our crosstown rivals, so I get to rub it in their face until one of them beats me,” Park said. “I got (four events) that I can say, ‘You didn’t beat me in this.’ So I can hold that over them.”

Even in races that were expected to be tight, CV pulled away in, such as the boys 1,600 relay. The Raiders won the race by nearly 10 seconds.

Zeit Cai, however, came up big for the Spartans in what was arguably the most intense race of the meet: the 800.

The junior edged out CV junior Noah Wade by a second for the win. The two went back and fourth, before Cai kicked into gear near the finish line.

“I barely beat Noah,” Cai said. “He’s beaten me all my life. It feels great. I came in here hoping to beat him and fortunately I did. I saved my best for last.”

Speaking of saving the best for last, Doug Pentland did exactly that for CV. He cleared 12 feet in the pole vault, the last event to be completed in the meet. The mark set a new personal best for the sophomore.

On the girls side, youth was served. Freshman Hannah McCarty won the 200 and 400 for the Raiders. She won the latter by nearly three seconds, despite having butterflies.

“All that hard work is paying off,” McCarty said. “It’s really exciting and nerve wracking.”

McCarty said she was especially nervous about running the 200 because she would be competing against CHS standout McKenzie Redberg.

But she received a break when Redberg sat out the rest of her events after running in the 400 relay because of bothersome quads.

Redberg’s younger sister, Whitney, took advantage of her older sibling’s absence in the 100. She finished two-tenths of second ahead of CV sophomore Marissa Kovac to take first.

“I was expecting it to be a close race because I played against a lot of the girls in soccer,” Whitney Redberg said. “So I knew they would be fast. I actually got a bad start and was behind everybody and then I kicked it in.”

Redberg also won the javelin to join Michaela Armstrong as multiple event winners for the Spartans. Armstrong took first in the discus and shot put. Kovac won the 100 hurdles and the triple jump for the Raiders.

The CV girls also won both relays by convincing margins, especially in 400, where they beat the Spartans by over 10 seconds.
