Mix honored at Purdue University

Lizette Anne May Caspe Mix of north Albany was recently recognized at the 2008 University Honors Convocation held April 13 at Purdue University. Mix, a sophomore at Purdue, is on the dean’s list for multiple terms. She is a full-ride scholar through the Navy-ROTC and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She is the daughter of Loren and Alma C. Mix and a 2006 graduate of Philomath High School.

Gable gets National Merit Scholarship

Aaron S. Gable of Corvallis recently received a National Merit Scholarship for $2,500. Gable is a senior at Corvallis High School and hopes to study engineering.

National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. They were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. These scholars may use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

4-H Fashion Revue Results

4-H members from Benton and Linn counties modeled at the Fashion Revue on April 19 in front of family and friends at Milam Auditorium at Oregon State University. With the stage decorated for the theme “Windows into Fashion,” 4-H members wore a variety of clothing items they had sewn.

Earlier in the day, judges Melissa Williams from Corvallis and Enid Savage of Eugene judged the 4-H members on poise and modeling skills, accessories and construction. Vicki Allstot represented the Family Community Education organization and gave awards for the Benton County Champion in each age division. 4-H members Marjorie Mahn of Corvallis and Megan Collins of Monroe co-chaired the youth committee that organized Fashion Revue and Betty Collins of Monroe and Jeri Hitchcock of Corvallis served as adult advisors.

4-H members received the following recognition:

In the senior category (grades 10 to 12) Megan Collins of Monroe (State Fair) was the champion, Marjorie Mahn of Corvallis (State Fair) was the reserve champion and the “Judges Choice” went to was Kayla Guldager of Monroe.

In the intermediate category (grades seven to nine) Sarah Hazleton of Corvallis (State Fair) was the champion, Jessica VanBeek of Monroe (State Fair) was the reserve champion and the “Judges Choice” went to Heather Brown of Corvallis and Mandy Rucker of Monroe.

In the junior (grades four to six) division, Kyra Forester of North Albany was the champion, Ellie Scrimsher of North Albany was the reserve champion and Sequoia White of Corvallis was the “Judges Choice.”

In the first year junior (grades four to six) division, the champion was Brooke Knutson of Corvallis, the reserve champion was Cynthia Cruz-Sanchez of Corvallis and “Judges Choice” went to Leah Conn of Monroe.

4-H is part of Oregon State University Extension Service, which offers educational programs, activities and materials without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital status, disability and disabled veteran or Vietnam-era veteran status.

American Legion Boys sponsorship

Chris Leonard, a Philomath High School junior, will be sponsored by the Marys River Post 100 of the American Legion to attend the American Legion Boys State on June 15 at the University of Oregon. Chris’ application was chosen for his resume in academics and sports.

Cheldelin gets honors at math face-off

Cheldelin Middle School Math Team recently won first place in the annual Pentagames math competition in Salem on April 25. Team members included Travis Larsen, Ashton Cleveland, Allison Lind, Shelby McIntyre, Kai Hundemer, Delanie Lewis, Margaret Hyde, Hannah Sneller and Eric Samelson.

The seventh-grade team of Larson, Cleveland and Lind took first place in their division, the algebra/open team of Hyde, Sneller and Samelson took second place in their division, and the eighth-grade team of Lewis, Hundemer and McIntyre took third place in their division.

Samelson was the overall individual winner in the algebra division and Hyde tied for fourth, Lind took first place individually in the seventh-grade division and Larsen tied for second place. Lewis took fifth place individually in the eighth-grade division. The Cheldelin team was coached by Anne Ulstad and Roxie Huffaker.

Roosevelt Middle School from Eugene placed second in the competition and Linus Pauling Middle School placed third.

Pentagames is an annual

Oregon-based middle school math competition held at several different sites around the state. Ninety students from 10 schools from Salem, Corvallis and Eugene participated in the competition. Students compete both individually and in team problem solving contests.

Grippin wins MacGyver Award

Don Grippin, custodial assistant at First Alternative Co-op, received the MacGyver Award for his efforts to reduce waste. Don regularly reduces waste through various methods including reusing waxed cardboard, digging discarded fluorescent lights from the trash to avoid contaminating the water table with mercury, recovering batteries from the recycling that still have power and collecting wax from cheese wheels in the deli to make candles.

The MacGyver award is given out quarterly to Co-op Employees whose inventive and ingenious activities merit recognition.
