Baseball: Robbins, Rebels upset Spartans

Gazette-Times

A day after scoring 30 runs against South Albany, the Corvallis High baseball team had a hard time getting going offensively and dropped a 5-3 Mid-Willamette Conference decision to the Rebels at Taylor Field on Wednesday.

South Albany’s Justin Robbins kept the Spartans scoreless over the first five innings. He finished with an eight-hitter, striking out five and walking two.

“We played with more energy and started to put better swings on the ball in the later innings,” CHS coach Eric Dazey said. “(Robbins) did a nice job keeping us at bay the first five.”

Cory England belted a two-run homer in the sixth for the Spartans, who fall to 9-2 in the MWC and 13-4 overall.

Aaron Corwin had three hits and England two for CHS, which closes out the three-game series with the Rebels at South Albany on Friday.

Jake Likewise struck out five and didn’t walk a batter over five innings and the Raiders came through with timely hitting to cruise past Woodburn for the MWC win at home.

The Raiders scored six runs in the second, three in the third, three in the fifth and five in the sixth.

Eight of the Raiders’ 14 hits went for extra bases, including seven doubles.

“The big difference between (Tuesday) night and (Wednesday night) was timely hitting,” CV coach David Mintken said. “We didn’t leave as many guys on base and our approach was much better with runners in scoring position.”

CV (8-8, 5-6) won Tuesday’s game 3-0. CV pitchers have allowed four hits the last two games.

The Raiders wrap up the three-game series at Woodburn on Friday.
