STAYTON — Philomath High pounded out 12 hits and pitcher Andy Harvey allowed only two in a complete-game performance on Monday in an 11-2 win over Stayton in its baseball opener.
Harvey struck out five and spaced seven walks. Kory Stueve homered and added two singles and two RBIs, Kyle Hansen had three hits and Josh Bitterman had two hits.
“We played well,” said coach Terry Stephenson, who still has several players on the PHS basketball team preparing to compete in the Class 4A state tournament. “Andy struggled a little but did a good job and we played good defense.
“For the first day out” against an opposing pitcher, “we swung the bat well.”
The Warriors play host to Sutherlin at 4:30 p.m. Friday in their home opener.

ADAIR VILLAGE — Grant Knowles had four singles and three RBIs as Santiam Christian opened the baseball season with a five-inning nonleague victory over Scio.
Michael Parkhurst had three hits and two RBIs and Paul Lancaster added two hits for the Eagles.
Korey Alexander struck out eight, walked one and allowed two hits.
“He was very sharp for the first time out,” SC coach Matt Nosack said. “Grant really swung the bat well. He had some hard hits up the middle for singles and some line drives. Paul Lancaster and Michael Parkhurst, those guys all looked very good.”
Santiam Christian plays on Friday at the Grant Union tournament in John Day.

PHILOMATH — Kandie Mendenhall delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth to lift Philomath High to a 3-2 victory over Stayton in the nonleague softball season opener.
Playing on a wet, sloppy field, the Warriors turned two inning-ending double plays. Both times they escaped a bases-loaded jam.
Deanna Page scored the winning run after hitting a one-out double in the sixth. She also earned the pitching win with four innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven and allowing one hit.
Kayleen Hannaway had a two-run single in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
Philomath will play at Cascade on Thursday.

The game was stopped after 31/2 innings by the mercy rule. SC plays at Central Linn on Wednesday.
