RIDDLE - The Monroe High girls basketball team opened Mountain View Conference play with a 52-26 win over Riddle on Thursday night.
After a sluggish first half, the Dragons (3-9) used a strong third quarter to pull away.
“We went into halftime, not shooting the ball very well,” MHS coach Tony Parker said. “We came out in the third quarter more aggressive on defense and got easier shots.”
MHS held the Irish to just two points in the quarter. Tarah Renshaw and Kim Thompson led the Dragons with 11 points apiece.
Monroe hosts Yoncalla on Saturday.

EDDYVILLE - Eddyville had a tough second half and dropped the Mountain West League game.
“I think we played well against a good team,” said EHS coach Randy Quetschke. “We battled and scrapped our way through. We had the lead at halftime but we got tired and they ran away from us in the third.”
The Eagles (2-5) were outscored 23-13 in the third. Hayli Gary led EHS with a game-high 20 points. Nicole Mack and Janice Jones each scored 15 for McKenzie.
Eddyville plays at Mohawk on Saturday.

ALSEA - Alsea struggled offensively and fell to 2-3 in the Mountain West League.
AHS (2-5) was held to under double digits in scoring every quarter. The Wolverines managed just two points in the second and third quarters.
Crow used a 22-point second quarter to pull away for good.
“They just outplayed us everywhere tonight,” AHS coach Lynn Cowdrey said.
Violet Cathcart led the Wolverines with nine points, while Naomi McGrew added four to complete the team’s scoring.
Alsea hosts Lowell on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

ALSEA - The Alsea boys basketball team fell to 4-4 in Mountain West League play with a 55-37 loss to visiting Crow.
AHS (5-5, 4-4) was outscored 19-8 in the second quarter and was unable to recover. The Wolverines played the Cougars to a 12-12 tie in the first.
“We just can’t seem to play a whole game,” AHS coach Rod Distefano said. “It’s frustrating.”
Tyson Schreiber led the Wolverines with 18 points. Justin Darby scored a game-high 26 points for Crow.
Alsea hosts Lowell on Saturday at 7 p.m.
