ADAIR VILLAGE — Second-ranked Santiam Christian opened the game by outscoring No. 6 Sheridan 23-12 and the Eagles didn’t let up defensively en route to the 63-44 nonconference boys basketball victory.
“We’re in that process of establishing how we want to play,” SC coach Ron Sisler said. “We want to defend and we play off our defensive intensity. Our kids were ready to play.”
It was the best first quarter of the season for the Eagles (5-0), who got 21 points from juior Demetri Howerton, 13 from sophomore David Nigro and seven points and seven rebounds from Seth Carey.

SALEM — The Saxons made 19 of 23 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the nonconference win over Crescent Valley.
Thomas McCarthy scored 16 of his team-high 19 in the fourth to lead the Raiders. CV (2-2) scored 28 points in the fourth, but was still outscored by five.
“We struggled with their defense,” CV coach Mike Stair said. “They ran a half-court trap that we had practiced for, but it just wasn’t clicking for us tonight.”
The Raiders committed 19 turnovers.

PHILOMATH — David Sturner scored 18 points and Derek Davis added 10 for Philomath in a home win against Cascade.
The Warriors (5-1) survived a fourth-quarter rally by the Cougars thanks to strong second and third quarters.
Trevor Motter had eight assists for Philomath, while Sturner led the team in rebounds with nine.

Girls basketball
Janelle Batista scored 13 points and Crescent Valley High defeated South Salem 50-41 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Tuesday.
Kelsey Kaufman scored six points and led the Raiders in assists with four.
Crescent Valley (3-2) committed 11 turnovers in the first half, but had only five in the second half. Being able to adapt to the defensive pressure was the difference in the game.

“We had some real fundamental errors and Cascade is a good team,” PHS coach Amy Leonard said. “We have lots to work on in practice.

Rachel Kubler scored four points and had seven rebounds for the Eagles (4-0). Alissa Ogle led Sheridan with eight points.
“We struggled with our offense, but we were able to pull it out with our defense,” SC coach Melissa McLain said.

EDDYVILLE — Violet Cathcart scored a game-high 20 points and Alsea held off Eddyville in the Mountain West League game.
Alsea built a 28-17 lead at the half but the Wolverines (1-1) had to withstand Eddyville’s 10-3 run in the fourth quarter.
Eddyville (1-1) was led by Hali Gary with 13 points.

ALBANY — The Crescent Valley Raiders won eight of 11 races on the girls side and six of 11 on the boys to defeat West Albany in a Mid-Willamette Conference dual meet at Albany Community Pool.
Sydney Boyce and Caroline Wells both had strong individual performances for CV’s girls, winning the 200 IM and 50 free, respectively.
Crescent Valley won the girls meet 114-56, while the boys prevailed 91-62.
Corvallis sweeps
Corvallis swept a Mid-Willamette Conference dual against South Albany at Osborn Aquatic Center.
The CHS boys won 161-110. The Spartans won all three relay races, while Logan Parker (200 free, 100 butterfly) and Ben Dawley (200 IM, 100 back) were dual event winners.
On the girls side, CHS won 159-127. Sloan Storie (200 free, 500 free), Annette Marinello (200 IM, 100 free) and Zoe Parker (50 free, 100 back) each won two events.
