HP crews spruced up care center

Grace Center Adult Day Service participants and staff thank the volunteers from the Hewlett-Packard Digital Projection and Imaging Dept. who participated in the "Day of Caring."

Our main activity room and living room are much brighter due to the efforts of such a friendly and hard-working group of volunteers. Thanks, too, go to the crew that cleaned the grounds around our building. Their generous gift of time and talent has enriched the lives of our participants.

Fast help saved boy's smile

Recently, members of the Assistance League of Corvallis helped in setting up a dental appointment for a young boy from Alsea who was at risk of developing an infection or losing teeth. His family had limited financial resources and no insurance.

The Assistance League was instrumental in securing the services of Dr. Greg Flannery, DDS, who saw the boy within 48 hours.

On behalf of the Benton County Health Department, we thank the Assistance League and Dr. Flannery for helping this child.

Legion bat/ball boys were great

Many thanks to the following young men who helped Corvallis put on a fabulous American Legion World Series by volunteering to be bat/ball boys during the 14 games held at Hansen Stadium at Taylor Field.

Not only did they assist the eight regional championship teams who came from all over the country to play baseball, they demonstrated many of the qualities we hope to inspire in all of our youth, such as being of service to others, being friendly and helpful to newcomers to Corvallis, staying focused and performing various duties with a smile. They arrived on time; suited up and ready to work. Their enthusiasm was contagious.

Thanks to Sean Adams, Jamie Alsip, Alan Arnold, Nate Barrett, Spencer Barrett, Jimmy Cleary, Stephen Cosky, Layne Croney, A.J. Fuchigami, Taylor Hagel, Collin Hall, Trent Hardin, Brandon Harris, Nolan Karpinski, Ian Leonard, Andrew Provencher, Dwight Rensom, Nathan Reynolds, Nate Rockey, Joey Spiegelberg, Josh Worden and Zachary Zaremba.

Donations warm Jackson St. shelter

The community guardian angels have come through again for the Jackson St. Youth Shelter. Our residents attended many of the American Legion World Series baseball games, thanks to a gift from Benjamin Hustace. Not only does this provide positive outings for young people that normally may not have had the resources, it also gets them involved in a community-sponsored event. What a great gift for our residents, and, of course, the staff that "must" go along as well.

In addition, community members should know that our very own Consumer's Power Inc. has provided funds for the shelter through its "Operation Round Up." Because of local ratepayers who have donated to this program, Jackson Street will have a portion of its utility bills subsidized through this award. Many thanks to you all!

Cars, raffle roaring success for Lions

The Mid Valley Lions just concluded its annual vehicle raffle, again with the help of Wilson Motors. Bill Hall, sales manager of Wilson Chrysler Dodge, lent us a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country for display purposes. A sales table was set up at Albany River Rhythms. We thank these community-minded neighbors for helping us raise funds for local adult eye care, youth outreach and the Oregon Lions' Sight & Hearing Foundation. Thanks also to everyone who bought raffle tickets.

Church a boon to Jefferson school

Many thanks to First Baptist Church of Corvallis for working at Jefferson Elementary School over the summer. They spruced up our planters, painted bookcases and even organized our staff room. We are grateful for the time and energy they spent getting us ready for school to start. Thank you, First Baptist Church of Corvallis!

Legion souvenir sales a success

The 78th American Legion World Series is now over, and we are all still thinking of the great games we saw and the players we met.

Thanks to the volunteers who made the souvenir sales a great success: The Altrusa Club of Corvallis, Donna Allen, Priscilla Greig, Evelyne and Guy Hendrix, Jeannette Maier, Tammy Skubinna, Eva Cotner, Nancy Davis, Sharon Emenegger, Karen Mills, Katie McLellan, Jan Holcomb, Margaret Champion, Teresa Landers, Pat Butts and even the club president from Eugene who helped! Thanks, also to Kim Nusbaum, Bonnie Breithaupt, Priscilla Harris, Barbara Case, my granddaughter, Rochelle, and Bethany Smith.

Thanks to Helen Hansen, Bill TenPas, our Committee Chairman, Roy Poppleton and his crew from Post 11, and Eric Dasey and his wonderful ground crew. It took many people to put on World Series together without Gene Hansen, but we did it for he was with us in spirit.

Last but not least, a giant thank you to my husband, Bardon.

KidSpirit camp took extra care

We'd like to thank the dedicated staff at Oregon State University's KidSpirit summer camp. Under the direction of Karen Swanger, the staff took extra care to ensure that our special-needs daughter would be able to keep up with the other children in the summer program and that she would enjoy herself. Their care and compassion went the extra mile, and we are so grateful! What a great program KidSpirit is!

‘Caring Place' is aptly named

How many ways can I say "Thank you?" ...Gracias, mercie beaucoup, dankeschoen, arigato gozimas!

No matter what language, the words are meant to express sincere appreciation to Marc Oldham and all the staff at Corvallis Caring Place for the excellent support and assistance they provide every day for the residents of this special assisted living facility.

Thank you for gently escorting someone to the dining room, listening attentively to stories about children and grandchildren, graciously helping a 90-year-old lady dress for the Starlight Ball or the recent fantastic luau, kindly reminding a resident about his/her medications, cheering for the Oregon State University football team with the residents or faithfully helping arrange medical appointments.

Thank you for these and many, many more acts of thoughtfulness and caring for all the women and men who make their home at Corvallis Caring Place.

SOS festival saved school sports

The Philomath Booster Club and the Philomath High School Athletic Department would like to thank the following people for their contributions toward our second annual "Save Our Sports" fall sports festival: Les & Bob's Sports and Apparel, Java Connection, Pepsi Cola of Corvallis, Philomath Thriftway, WinCo Foods, Fred Meyer-Corvallis, Costco Wholesale-Albany, Emmons Meat Market, Safeway-Philomath Blvd., The Montgomery Family (for supplying the cow for the Cow Pie Drop), the Dalke Family, for all their hard work on the barbeque, and all of our wonderful volunteers.

The generous support we received for this event allowed us to raise funds to assist the athletic department in continuing to offer sports programs at all levels; something that we feel is so important to our athletes, our school and our community.
